Background

To make the connected world more secure, Intrinsic ID develops device-specific data security and authentication solutions that already protect over 400 million devices. For this, a structured and professional handling of requirements is of utmost importance to execute projects error-free and efficiently.

In the past, the work with requirements was carried out document-based in Word and Excel.

However, with the increasing complexity and number of development projects and the general growth of the company, the importance of formally approached requirements management steadily grew as well.

In the documents-based approach the maintenance of requirements states was often time consuming, as these had to be documented manually and by one person on demand.

Additionally, the tests did not always formally refer to their corresponding requirements. Furthermore, due to the growing volume of requirements, impact analysis quickly became too cumbersome when changes were made, as links between requirements became too complex to document in office tools.

Consequently, the full acquisition of requirements and maintaining an overview of all requirements was an error-prone, laborious, and difficult process due to inadequate tool support. This resulted in significant extra work in the review process to fix problems that arose.

Solution

In order to achieve increased efficiency and error reduction in the acquisition and maintenance of requirements, Intrinsic ID intended to use a specialized tool solution.

When comparing tools for the selection of the software, it was particularly important for Intrinsic ID to find a solution that could offer comprehensive and powerful tracing functions so that full traceability of requirements could be created.

Great importance was also attached to the ability to feed test results directly back into the tool, as well as to strong import and export functionalities to facilitate the exchange of information with other parties and tools. The ability to use the solution On Prem was also considered, as it was still unclear at the time of tool selection whether a cloud solution could be used.

The requirements management software ReqSuite® RM from OSSENO Software quickly proved to be a suitable candidate to significantly improve Intrinsic ID’s requirements management.

As part of an existing development project, which was used to try out the new RM software in the company, OSSENO consultants conducted several workshops together with a core team of software and hardware development employees.

Here, the process-related requirements of Intrinsic ID were first assessed in order to be able to set up the software individually for the company. At the same time, the participants were introduced to the use of the tool.

Based on the functional possibilities offered by ReqSuite® RM, a new data and process model was jointly defined, based on the V-model, on which requirements acquisition and maintenance were to be based in the future.

OSSENO then configured ReqSuite® RM and imported inventory data from Excel into the underlying database, whereupon the first project work could already be carried out.

The result of this work was a database for requirements acquisition and maintenance that was completely configured to the needs of Intrinsic ID and could already be used in the company in a target-oriented manner immediately after the configuration.

Due to the active participation of the users during the workshops, as well as the high intuitiveness and complete adaptation of the solution to the needs of Intrinsic ID, separate training of the users afterwards was no longer necessary.

Results

After ReqSuite® RM was successfully tested in a first project, Intrinsic ID employees were able to independently transfer the gained experience and the resulting processes into the tool configuration.

The users were able to quickly notice strong improvements regarding the completeness and quality of requirements, especially through the AI-based assistance functions such as the quality check and the linking functions.

At the same time, the V-model implemented in ReqSuite® RM streamlined and improved the way of working, which also significantly contributed to increasing the quality of the processes and consequently the products.

The overall goal of increasing efficiency and quality and improving traceability in requirements management was thus fully achieved.

For example, development efficiency was massively increased by the automatic impact analyses as this means that the effects of requirements changes can be analysed in a quarter of the previous time.

Initial doubts as to whether the change in work culture associated with the introduction of the tool solution would be accepted were not confirmed, as the employees were able to get used to the new database-based way of working well and now prefer it to the previous way of working.
